When I first stumbled upon Jon Benson & Janis Hauser’s ebook “The Every Other Day Diet” (also know as EODD), I’ll admit to you that I was both intrigued and a little skeptical.
Why?
Let’s just say that “The Every Other Day Diet” is a little unconventional. It’s methods seem unrealistic at first glance-a little “too good to be true” if you will. That was my first impression anyways…
If you’ve never heard of the EODD, you can learn more about it by Clicking Here to visit the official website.
Unlike most diets that rely on heavy caloric restrictions to burn fat, this program actually encourages you to eat what you want every other day! Sounds good if it actually works right?
The real question is could a diet like this actually help you lose weight and keep it off? In all honesty I wouldn’t have thought so myself, but I had to give the co-author Jon Benson the benefit of the doubt since he is a well respected fitness expert who has published numerous diet and fitness related books over the last few years.
Anyways, I had come to the decision that the program warranted further examination, and bought myself a copy so I could share a review with my readers…
What is “The Every Other Day Diet” all About?
I’ve got my own explanation of “The Every Other Day Diet” below, but before you read that you may want to hear Jon Benson himself explain how this program works and why it is different than most others out there. You can listen to the video by CLICKING HERE to visit his official website.
Why should we listed to Jon? Well the guy does practice what he preaches. He was able to lose 70 Lbs. using the same principles that he based The EODD around (see picture below).

Once I started to understand the simple science behind the EODD, things began to make more sense. The program is designed to restrict calories and burn body fat without compromising your body’s ability to burn calories. In the ebook they call it “interval eating” & “planned variance”, fancy words for caloric cycling.
What is caloric cycling?
Simply put, it a way of manipulating caloric intake and tricking your body into thinking that calories are not being restricted, when they actually are.
So why does your body need to be tricked into thinking that there is no caloric deficit? Well, your body begins to slow it’s metabolic rate making it harder and harder to lose weight. Unfortunately this is a survival mechanism that has been around since we were cave people!
The EODD uses caloric cycling to maximize your metabolic rate, which makes perfect sense.
The Structure of the EODD Diet
The “Every Other Day Diet” is broken down into what they call “burn days” and “feed days”. During the burn days, you eat only 30-50% of your maintenance caloric intake. During the feed days, you consume up to 150% of your maintenance caloric intake. You are allowed to eat the foods that you like on these days as long as the portions are controlled.
And that brings me to
what Jon calls the HOME method (Hands on Method of Food Eating) to figure out how much food you should consume.
Simply put, portions of food coincide with different parts of your hands making it fairly simple to measure your portion sizes.
Can I Really Eat Whatever I want With The EODD?
Well, yes and no. Let me explain…
There are three different variations of the EODD that you can choose from:
- Primer – This is the most flexible of the three programs, and does allow you to essentially eat whatever you want every other day.
- Lifestyle – The maintenance program, recommended after the initial primer phase. There are only two “feed days” here, meaning that you can only eat whatever you want for these two days.
- Extreme – The most strict of the three plans, meant for athletes and bodybuilders.
The “primer” is the only program that you can eat whatever you want every other day. Jon recommends that you begin with this program, and progress to the “lifestyle” program which only allows two weekly days where you can eat any types of food.
Will “The Every Other Day Diet” Work for Me?
Jon makes it very clear that there are “three conditions” that you have to “take to heart” in order to succeed with this program.
Those conditions are:
- Dedication – Weight loss is like most other things in life. In order to succeed, there needs to be a certain level of dedication. Like any diet, the EODD will not work if you are not dedicated!
- Exercise – Any weight loss program that says you do not have to exercise is a scam. The EODD requires you to perform some form of exercise regularly. Fair enough!
- Be Reasonable – Having unrealistic expectations is a no no. It’s taken you years and years to accumulate this excess weight, so don’t expect to lose it all in two weeks!
Simply put, if you are willing to work hard, exercise, and have realistic expectations about the results you achieve, then the EODD should work well for you.
Now keep in mind that I have not actually tried the diet myself, I only purchased the program to review it for my readers.
What I can tell you after evaluating the entire program is this:
- The diet is simple and makes scientific sense
- The ebook is well written and easy to follow
- The bonuses included with the ebook were of high quality and were useful
- The free year’s worth of weekly support newsletters are a great resource.
In the end I think that the Every Other Day Diet is certainly worth a try if you are looking for a simple program that will help you lose weight while still enjoying some of the foods you love.
Simply put, if traditional diets have not worked for you, then The Every Other Day Diet may be the approach that you need to take.

Have you tried the Every Other Day Diet? We’d really like to hear your experiences with it. Did it work for you?

Normally I don’t leave comments on websites, but I have to on this one. This diet sounds similar to the “Up Day Down Day Diet” by Dr. James Johnson my sister told me about to 3 years ago. It was a life saver! I was so overweight and so desperate to loose weight not to mention I had tried every other diet and pill out there. The “Down” day was not easy, but I kept telling myself it’s ok you can eat tomorrow. After I got through the first week my body adjusted to the “Down” day and the weight kept coming off, I never had a weight loss plateau either. This diet works, believe me, I am 42 and lost 80 lbs. in 6 months. I had gained and lost the same 50 pounds more times than I care to think about plus packed on more weight each time I re-gained the lost weight.I did work out 3 times a week and planned my days – I prepared the foods for my down day on my up day so I didn’t have to think about or make food choices on that down day. Also on my up days, I did not gorge on fast foods and pizza – if I did splurge or go out to eat, I watched my portions and ate something before I went out so I wouldn’t be out of control.
Jen,
Thanks for the comment! I appreciate you sharing your experience to help other readers. There is no question in my mind that an effective weight loss program requires that you cycle your caloric intake, not only to maintain motivation, but also to keep the body “guessing” so that you continue to burn calories efficiently. The Every Other Day Diet makes cycling caloric intake easy, which is why it’s been such a success.
You have got to be kidding me with the before and after photos – those are definitely two different people! Look at the noses not to mention hair color, face shape, etc. Get real people!
Yes it is hard to believe, but the picture is absolutely real. Just do a little more research on “Jon Benson” and you will learn more about him and his story… Quite amazing!
Jon uploaded a great video that explains how the EODD works.

im 14 and tired of getting picked on at school, im 186 lbs and going into 10th grade so are there any tips you can give me?? i cant afford the diet plan.
Lolli – that’s sad. Forget about the kids who are getting at you, there’s no excuse for bullying like that.
The only tips I can give are the same old I’m afraid. Eat less and exercise more. The EODD is a great plan no doubt, but it’s not the only way to lose weight. The best way is simply to make a plan and STICK TO IT.
Try to do an hour of cardio three days a week – it’ll be tough, you won’t feel like you want to, but just keep thinking about why you’re doing it and stay motivated. Results aren’t instant, but if you are serious about losing weight, you need to be serious about persevering.
Even if it’s just some brisk walking, that’s a great place to start. Got a bike? Go out on rides! Especially at this time of year, it’s not only good for you, but really enjoyable too. Take your MP3 player with you and concentrate on the music as you go. You’ll cover more ground than you think.
Limit your calorie intake – if your mom’s cooking food you know isn’t helping, try to eat smaller portions. Cut out processed junk if you can and swap “white” foods (white pasta, white bread etc) for their wholewheat equivalent. Sure, wholemeal breat doesn’t taste as good, but it’s a whole lot better for you.
And drink plenty of water!
Don’t weigh yourself on a daily basis either. Weight loss is a gradual process, and you shouldn’t expect to see results immediately. Try weighing yourself three or so weeks into your plan, by which time you should start to see some progress. It’ll get easier too – the start is the hardest bit!
Maybe you’ve heard this all before but there’s a good reason for that – it’s because these simple steps really do work. You don’t need to spend money on gym memberships. You don’t need to spend money on diet plans. You can’t “buy yourself thin”. You have work at it. It WILL take effort, but if you put in that effort, it WILL work.
Good luck!
Hey all! Jon Benson here… I just noticed the kind review and wanted to say “thanks” to the BRB for the kind words.
@happy: Feel free to contact me through my website (jonbenson.com) and I’ll send you all my pictures. I’ve never had any nose work done, and my hair is just shorter. When you get really lean like I was in those shots, your face dynamic changes a LOT, but I invite you to put me to the test. I wish that before was NOT me, but sad to say, it was.
@Jen: I’ve never heard of that book Jen, but it’s clearly a take on mine (which was published in 2004; his in 2008.) There is a James Johnson in our reader database, so I may have to drop him a letter… : ) Anyway, I’m thrilled it helped you out. My diet solution is quite different (I read his reviews) as he focuses on fasting to evoke greater SIRT1 facilitation. While this is biochemically true in rodents, it’s not tested in humans… and I do not think fasting is necessary to evoke this gene. That said, I ‘do’ recommend a Sunday fast for those on the Primer Plan on my diet for this reason, and it seems to be plenty. Genes do not turn off and on like a light switch, but respond to pattens and (occasionally) biochemical triggers. Nonetheless, you did it… and that’s all that matters!

I have a lot of health problems that came on me about 10 years ago. I was very active and I ate well. However, that came to an end when I found out that I had Hep-C and was on a form of chemotherapy for 48 weeks and then was back on it for another 48 weeks. Finally in 2007, I went on a study drug, it worked, but the damage has already been done. My liver is so enlarge that it takes up most of my abdomen and my spleen is pushing 15 cm.
My weight has gone from a health 155 to an unhealthy 250, but I’m down to 234 right now. I’ve had to have major back surgery, with bone removal from my back and hip. And now we found out that I have a fracture clavicle. I’m tired of being tired and being unable to exercise due to my back and illness. There got to be something that I can do to get my self back to a healthy weight get rid of the fat in my liver (fatty liver disease) Can your book really help me.
I just thought of sharing my story — I’ve been looking for sites that reviews this product.
I first learned about this program in the link I provided inn this comment and I really liked it. I have been using this program for 2-3 months and I have lost a big flab from my belly. This diet plan is really amazing and it works for me and it could work on others too. Before I tried to skip meals because I thought that for me to lose weight I need to limit my food intake but then someone told me that when you do not intake food, the body’s metabolism slows down and this only means it will store more fat because this is the body’s way to cope up with the less nutrition given. So I searched the internet and then I found out that this is true and then there’s this caloric cycling. I was skeptical at first but since I’m desperate, I tried it and it works. So for everyone here who’s trying to lose weight, please try this program and who knows.. good luck everyone.
